The Hu Live at The Wiltern Theater Los Angeles, CA June 6th, 2026 Review and photos by Travis Baumann Mongolian folk-metal masters return to North America and bring their unique sound: blending modern and ancient in a way that stirs the soul - regardless of where it may dwell. Hu means "human being" in Mongolian and their lyrics reflect a mixture of historic documentation of their culture and an introspective look at what it means to be human in the modern multi-cultural world. The band in itself is composed of four core members, Gala, Jaya, Enkush, and Temka. All of them contribute the signature throat singing and stand in a line at the head of the stage. Two of them play traditional stringed instruments across their chest - a morin khuur or horse head fiddle, and one on of them plays the tovshuur - a guitar shaped folk instrument. Joining this quartet on stage are Ono on large traditional style drums, Jamba on guitar, Odko on drums, and Davaa on bass. These guys all sing as well so with all eight men playing and singing together, it has the impact of a small tribe and quite a force of nature. They had a huge LED wall behind them which had interesting and varied images and textures throughout the show. One standout moment was during one of the more ballad-esque songs they showed beautiful imagery of snow leopards (their signature totem animal as seen in their logo), lemurs, monkees and other endangered animals, it was really moving. Their latest album "The Hun" is due out next month and they included a good amount of the new matieral in what was a massive sixteen song setlist. Fortunately this gave them the time to hit all the favorites from their previous releases as well inducing sing alongs and much cheer. They started the set with Lost Soul and did a reprise of it for the encore but this time with Jonny Hawkins of Nothing More on vocals. It was an epic evening that was fullfilling in every way. Great musicians and a very cool vibe that makes them a must-see band.
