This year marks the 40th anniversary of the electro‑industrial powerhouse Suicide Commando. Formed in Belgium in 1986, Johan Van Roy has spent four decades constructing an uncompromisingly dark sonic empire—one that has shaken dance floors across the globe and helped define the harsher edges of the dark-electro industrial scene.

Though predominantly a solo project, Johan was joined on stage by longtime collaborator Torben Schmidt on keyboards and Mario Vaerewijck on drums. The set opened by diving deep into the project’s earliest, starkest material—tracks even more minimal and shadow‑drenched than memory suggests—before erupting into later club‑dominating staples like “Hellraiser,” where distorted vocals, punishing drum programming, and layered synths reminded everyone why these songs became genre‑defining anthems.

The show unfolded as a chronological journey, weaving through every era of the discography and giving longtime fans a rare chance to relive the evolution of Johan’s sound. Onstage, he was in constant motion—a consummate performer shaped by decades of clubs and festivals across Europe. While he’s played Los Angeles a handful of times, he remains a major presence on the DAC (German Alternative Charts) and a fixture of European industrial events.

Lighting was intentionally sparse, with the band silhouetted against a massive LED wall projecting imagery that was appropriately sinister, macabre, and tailored to each track. The atmosphere felt ritualistic—more invocation than concert.

Although this tour has been billed as Johan’s final North American run, he left the crowd buzzing with his parting words: “This is not the end!” before disappearing backstage.

1720 was absolutely packed, and Johan gave a heartfelt shout‑out to Reverend John of Das Bunker for supporting Suicide Commando from their earliest West Coast appearances to this milestone performance.

In the end, it was a powerful, career‑spanning set—one that carried the audience from the raw early days of the scene to the sharpened, hard‑hitting present. A fitting celebration of forty years of darkness..
