Lacuna Coil

The Italian powerhouse known as Lacuna Coil once again held up their dark skrying-glass look at the soul, delivering their iconic symphonic layered sound that remains unique in the metal world.

Often described as goth-metal, the thing that makes them resonate with the "goth movement' is the fascination with universal truths, often shaded with beautiful yet dark themes, and an a/gnostic, if not outright anti-religious outlook on the universe.

They started the set with what has become my absolute favorite Lacuna Coil song so far, "Layers of Time" off of Black Anima. It is a massive, and appropriately dramatic, statement that showcases both of the the amazing singers, Cristina Scabbia and Andre Farro.

A needed shout-out to the master-mind behind this brilliant construction, Marco Coti Zelati. On stage he plays bass but he is also the composer and main song-writer through-out their thirty-plus year career. Backing up the three core members are Richard Meiz on drums and Daniele Salomone on guitar.

The setlist was flawless. They highlighted their latest album, Sleepless Empire, with eight tracks, while also weaving in nine songs from across their most defining eras. Time absolutely flew by, and before I knew it they were closing the main set with their anthem “Nothing Stands in Our Way.”

They came back out and did another four song encore which was amazing, balancing legacy staples like “Swamped” with newer material, culminating in the explosive finale “Never Dawn” from their latest release.

I have seen Lacuna Coil many times over the years, having been first introduced to them in Germany back in 2001 and seeing them later that year here in Los Angeles with Moonspell. I have been a fan for a quarter of century now and tonight was honestly one of, if not THE best performance I have seen. Fantastic show.
