Jinjer

Live at The Wiltern Theater

Los Angeles, CA

Review and photos by Travis Baumann

Dichotomy is the perfect word for Jinjer. Not only does it echo their breakout track Pisces, but it also captures the astonishing range of vocalist Tatiana Shmayluk. Her soaring melodic lines collide with growls thick as tar and heavy as steel, placing her in a league entirely her own. Few singers move so fluidly between light and darkness, beauty and brutality..

Jinjer are touring their latest release "Duél", a record layered with meaning both personal and global. Hailing from Ukraine, their home world has been defined by war, for it feels like an eternity. They have been branded as official ambassadors of their beleaguered country, still besieged by the Red Nemisis that we thought had finally faded when the Soviet Union collapsed into pieces decades ago.

Musically the three men that accompany Tatiana bring a discordant, heavy metalcore statement that is also laden with progressive experimentation and perfectly compliments her shape-shifting delivery. Roman Ibramkhalilov handles guitar, Eugene Abdukhanov brings the low end on bass, and Vladislav "Vladi" Ulasevich plays the drums like a man possessed.

The band delivered a massive setlist with the new album taking center stage, tracking eight songs off it. They did hit up three of their other albums and one of their EPs as well, so they gave fans a taste of everything they were hoping to hear (in my case, "I Speak Astronomy" - I just love that song).

It was an absolutely fantastic performance, everything that Jinjer brings to the table.  If you have not seen these guys yet, you need to get yourself to a show, I have been to every one in LA since 2018 - they are definitely one of my favorite bands to see live.
