Belphegor

Live at 1720

Los Angeles, CA

March 9th, 2026

Review and photos by Travis Baumann

For over thirty years Belphegor have brought their own signature darkness. Named after one of the Seven Princes of Hell, they strive and succeed to live up to the name.

Austrian in origin, the metal powerhouse play a mixture of Black and Death Metal but also use symphonic elements and industrial influences such as film samples and fx-processing at key moments for narrative impact.

On songs like "Virtus Asinaria - Prayer", they went full on Rotting Christ chant-mode which was awesome. I have known these guys by name for decades but after seeing them live, I went deep-dive, and these guys deserve a lot of credit... they have been pumping out awesome dark metal forever!

What they also bring on top of the great music is an amazing live show with the everything you want from a band like this: corpse paint (or their own bloody equivalent), each member donning their own identity.

Musical technical precision, mixed with an oppressive, yet somehow uplifting atmospheric veil, these guys killed it live. The entire room was enthralled.

Their message lives heavily in the realm of hell, fitting for a prince of hell. They have been consistent in this for their entire discography so they obviously have a passion.

They are definitely an amazing band to see live, a moving, relentless performance that you think about months after the show.
